    The relationships between school inspections, school characteristics and school improvement.M. C. M. Ehren & A. J. Visscher - 2008 - British Journal of Educational Studies 56 (2):205-227.
The effects of school inspections on school improvement have been investigated only to a limited degree. The investigation reported on in this article is meant to expand our knowledge base regarding the impact of school inspections on school improvement. The theoretical framework for this research is partly based on the policy theory behind the Dutch Educational School Supervision Act (the latter includes assumptions about how school inspections lead to school improvement). Interviews and a survey with school inspectors gave insight into (...)

    Towards a theory on the impact of school inspections.M. C. M. Ehren & A. J. Visscher - 2006 - British Journal of Educational Studies 54 (1):51-72.
This article describes a theory about the ambition of most Inspectorates to realise 'school improvement through inspection'. Literature about a number of direct and indirect interventions, such as reciprocity, communication and feedback is used to build a theoretical model stating the relations between working methods of school inspectors, reactions of schools and resulting effects and side effects. Finally two types of inspections strategies are described that can be used in different types of schools. We expect schools with a low innovation (...)

Fishing for the Right Words: Decision Rules for Human Foraging Behavior in Internal Search Tasks.Andreas Wilke, John M. C. Hutchinson, Peter M. Todd & Uwe Czienskowski - 2009 - Cognitive Science 33 (3):497-529.
Animals depleting one patch of resources must decide when to leave and switch to a fresh patch. Foraging theory has predicted various decision mechanisms; which is best depends on environmental variation in patch quality. Previously we tested whether these mechanisms underlie human decision making when foraging for external resources; here we test whether humans behave similarly in a cognitive task seeking internally generated solutions. Subjects searched for meaningful words made from random letter sequences, and as their success rate declined, they (...)

Perceived emotional and informational support for cancer: Patients’ perspectives on interpersonal versus media sources.Julia C. M. Van Weert, Camella J. Rising & Nadine Bol - 2022 - Communications 47 (2):171-194.
This study examined cancer patients’ perceived emotional and informational support from a variety of interpersonal and media sources. We recruited patients from cancer patient association websites and online cancer forums and asked them to report to what extent they received support from interpersonal and media sources. Patients rated professional sources and personal sources as nearly equal sources of emotional support; however, professional sources were rated as significantly greater sources of informational support. Although family and oncologists were the most mentioned interpersonal (...)

    Age differences in preferences for emotionally-meaningful versus knowledge-related appeals.Julia C. M. Van Weert, Nadine Bol & Margot J. van der Goot - 2021 - Communications 46 (2):205-228.
Socioemotional selectivity theory (SST), an influential life-span theory, suggests that older adults prefer persuasive messages that appeal to emotionally-meaningful goals over messages that appeal to knowledge-related goals, whereas younger adults do not show this preference. A mixed-factorial experiment was conducted to test whether older adults (≥65 years) differ from younger adults (25–45 years) in their preference for emotionally-meaningful appeals over knowledge-related appeals, when appeals are clearly developed in line with SST. For older adults we found the expected preference for emotionally-meaningful (...)

    What, Exactly, is Cladistics? Re-writing the History of Systematics and Biogeography.D. M. Williams & M. C. Ebach - 2008 - Acta Biotheoretica 57 (1-2):249-268.
The development of comparative biology has been of interest to philosophers and historians. Particular attention has been placed on the ‘war’ of the 1970s and 1980s, the apparent dispute among those who preferred this or that methodology. In this contribution we examine the history of comparative biology from the perspective of fundamentals rather than methodologies. Our examination is framed within the artificial—natural classification dichotomy, a viewpoint currently lost from view but worth resurrecting.

    A phase transition between localist and distributed representation.Peter C. M. Molenaar & Maartje E. J. Raijmakers - 2000 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 23 (4):486-486.
Bifurcation analysis of a real-time implementation of an ART network, which is functionally similar to the generalized localist model discussed in Page's manifesto shows that it yields a phase transition from local to distributed representation owing to continuous variation of the range of inhibitory connections. Hence there appears to be a qualitative dichotomy between local and distributed representations at the level of connectionistic networks conceived of as instances of nonlinear dynamical systems.

    Latent variable models are network models.Peter C. M. Molenaar - 2010 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 33 (2-3):166-166.
Cramer et al. present an original and interesting network perspective on comorbidity and contrast this perspective with a more traditional interpretation of comorbidity in terms of latent variable theory. My commentary focuses on the relationship between the two perspectives; that is, it aims to qualify the presumed contrast between interpretations in terms of networks and latent variables.

    Flat Space Gravitation.J. M. C. Montanus - 2005 - Foundations of Physics 35 (9):1543-1562.
A new description of gravitational motion will be proposed. It is part of the proper time formulation of physics as presented on the IARD 2000 conference. According to this formulation the proper time of an object is taken as its fourth coordinate. As a consequence, one obtains a circular space–time diagram where distances are measured with the Euclidean metric. The relativistic factor turns out to be of simple goniometric origin. It further follows that the Lagrangian for gravitational dynamics does not (...)

Efforts for the Correct Comprehension of Deceitful and Ironic Communicative Intentions in Schizophrenia: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study on the Role of the Left Middle Temporal Gyrus.R. Morese, C. Brasso, M. Stanziano, A. Parola, M. C. Valentini, F. M. Bosco & P. Rocca - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Deficits in social cognition and more specifically in communication have an important impact on the real-life functioning of people with schizophrenia. In particular, patients have severe problems in communicative-pragmatics, for example, in correctly inferring the speaker’s communicative intention in everyday conversational interactions. This limit is associated with morphological and functional alteration of the left middle temporal gyrus, a cerebral area involved in various communicative processes, in particular in the distinction of ironic communicative intention from sincere and deceitful ones. We performed (...)

Bazzocchi disposes the text of the Tractatus in a user-friendly manner, exactly as Wittgenstein's decimals advise. This discloses the logical form of the book by distinct reading units, linked into a fashioned hierarchical tree. The text becomes much clearer and every reader can enjoy, finally, its formal and literary qualities.

    Transition to an Ordinal Metaphysics. [REVIEW]C. M. M. - 1982 - Review of Metaphysics 35 (4):900-901.
Despite many reservations, Transition to an Ordinal Metaphysics is interesting because it continues a tradition which takes the metaphysical enterprise seriously, which attempts to examine the nature and function of metaphysics, and which attempts to communicate the insights and conceptual power of what Ross terms the ordinal approach to that enterprise.

This paper challenges T. S. Gendler's notion of aliefs, a novel kind of mental state which she introduces to explain a wide variety of belief-discordant behaviors. In particular, I argue that many of the cases which she uses to motivate such a mental state can be fully explained by accounts that make use only of commonplace attitudes such as beliefs and desires.

It has recently been argued that hope is polysemous in that it sometimes refers to hoping and other times to being hopeful. That it has these two distinct senses is reflected in the observation that a person can hope for an outcome without being hopeful that it will occur. Below, I offer a new argument for this distinction. My strategy is to show that accepting this distinction yields a rich account of two distinct ways in which hope can be lost, (...)
